Electives

There are two hours of elective time each day for campers to try other activities, or participate in one-act plays. Since we share the campus with the sister camps of the Ballibay Camps, Camptown Theater Workshop campers can participate in all of the programs offerend by these other camps as electives in their own day:

How does this work?

On the first day of camp all campers have their informal voice and acting audition, plus a complete orientation to all the available activities on the Ballibay campus. This is done in the form of a tour, where campers visit every activity area, get an introduction to the area from a counselor, and have an opportunity to express their interest in the program.

If they express interest on this first day, they will be added to one of the teachers' rosters and called for a lesson as the teacher's schedule permits.

Even if they don't express interest on that first day, there are four more ways to get involved:

  • most activity areas announce at least one "open" class every day; campers are welcome to attend if they do not have another scheduled commitment.
  • Some activity areas are essentially "always open," such as the garden, the art studios, and technical theater. Students can walk in any time and a staff person will help them get started with a project or give them a task this will also be a learning opportunity. Open areas announce that they are open every day.
  • With only a few exceptions, we encourage observation in all activity areas, and when campers have free time they are welcome to visit an activity area. An benefit of this is that interested campers are often present when there is an unexpected opening in the lesson schedule. In other words, campers who hang out in their favorite activity areas often can get a lot of extra lesson time!
  • Our staff are very approachable, and we encourage campers to always discuss their interests and schedule with their counselors and teachers. Campers can add activities, or increase or decrease participation in any elective activity through one-on-one discussion with a counselor.
